How can artificial intelligence improve care for critically ill children and adolescents? At UNLEASH meets KnowledgeMove 2026, Prof. Dr. Thomas Jack provided insights on September 9, 2026, into specific applications and current research projects in pediatric intensive care medicine.
In his keynote presentation “Artificial Intelligence for Decision Support and Diagnostics in Pediatric Intensive Care”, Jack demonstrated how AI can support clinical teams with diagnostic questions and medical decisions. Using examples of cases where AI is already integrated into patient care, he illustrated the potential benefits of digital expert systems and data-driven methods at the bedside.
In addition, Jack presented current research projects aimed at bringing AI closer to the “bedside” of critically ill patients. The focus is on integrating such systems into routine clinical practice in the future, thereby improving patient care. This is linked to the hope of further increasing the chances of survival for critically ill children and adolescents.
The presentation highlighted the potential of these approaches as well as the challenges and risks associated with their use. The key question here is how technological possibilities can be translated into concrete support for treatment and tangible benefits for young patients.
