The Institute of Artificial Intelligence welcomes applications for the following position at the beginning of 2026: Research Staff / Academic Staff in the field of Automated Machine Learning (salary scale 13 TV-L, 100 %).
The position is initially offered for a period of three years, with the possibility of extension.

Your position at a glance
Our research team at the LUH focuses on machine learning, automated machine learning (AutoML), and reinforcement learning (RL). We are seeking a highly motivated doctoral candidate (PhD student) to join our team. The position offers the opportunity to conduct research on innovative topics, with a particular focus on developing novel approaches for automated deep learning and AI, especially with applications in optical or photonic systems. The position is also affiliated with the Cluster of Excellence PhoenixD.
In addition to conducting cutting-edge research, you will actively engage in scientific exchange and active collaboration with related research groups, including presenting research findings at workshops, conferences, and in peer-reviewed journals. Furthermore, you will have the chance to contribute to open-source projects, thereby promoting the wider dissemination of research results and advancing the field of AI.
Your profile
We are looking for candidates with a passion for the engineering applications of AI and innovation. If you are dedicated, creative, and motivated to make a positive impact through research, we encourage you to apply for our position in Automated Machine Learning.
Applicants should hold an academic degree (Master’s) in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Data Science, Statistics, Physics, or a related discipline.
In addition, the following qualifications are expected:
- Outstanding Master’s thesis in the field of Artificial Intelligence is desired
- Solid understanding of, and practical experience with, machine learning and deep learning
- Advanced programming skills in Python, preferably with experience in PyTorch and HuggingFace
- Excellent communication skills in English, both verbal and written, including the ability to write scientific texts (German skills are a plus)
- Motivation for independent work and the ability to collaborate in an international team
