Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Marius Lindauer

Prof. Dr. Marius Lindauer has been Professor of Machine Learning at Leibniz University Hannover since 2019 and has headed the Institute for Artificial Intelligence since 2022. His research focuses on automatic machine learning (AutoML) to enable efficient and targeted development of new AI applications. Other research areas include Bayesian optimization, reinforcement learning and interpretable ML. He is co-leader of the AutoML.org supergroup, member of ELLIS, member of the extended board of directors of the L3S research center, co-founder and board member of the COSEAL research network, and was awarded an ERC Starting Grant on AutoML in 2022.

What potential and challenges do you see in interdisciplinary collaboration in CAIMed for your field?

Each discipline speaks its own language and has its own work processes. Bringing these together and following a common path that nevertheless covers the diversity of possibilities is a key challenge.

How important is collaboration between AI experts and healthcare professionals for the success of AI in medicine?

Sometimes the solution is developed first and then we look at which question it can actually answer. Starting with the (medical) question and developing the right solution will enable us to address the really important problems using AI.

What challenges are associated with the integration of AI in medicine, particularly with regard to data protection and ethics?

AI is developing at breakneck speed. But the question of data availability is always fundamental. We need a fast and efficient way of exchanging data between groups that is also safe (especially for patients).
