Prof. Dr. med. Philipp Ströbel has been Director of the Institute of Pathology at the University Medical Center Göttingen since 2012.

Among other things, he was scientific director of the BMBF-funded joint project CancerScout, whose main topic was the AI-supported prediction of therapy-relevant molecular changes in human tumors based on histological specimens. The project is being continued by creating comprehensive annotated case collections for different tumor diseases as a basis for federated learning. The institute is one of the first in Germany to have been working exclusively with digital images in patient care for several years and is currently implementing AI algorithms in routine histopathological diagnostics.

I believe that the close collaboration between AI experts and medical professionals will be crucial for the success of AI in medicine in general and CAIMed in particular. Medical professionals need the help of AI experts to develop the tools that make a difference in their daily practice. On the other hand, AI experts have the unique chance to access high quality real world clinical data that would otherwise be stored behind firewalls and would be inaccessible to them. It is really a process of mutual learning from each other.
